How to modify the maximum resolution of virtual machine linux

setting the maximum of only 1024, according to the tutorial method to load a VBoxGuestAdditions.iso file under the vm virtual box folder and then run the vboxlinuxaddtion.run file, but this file opened with texteditor to load for a long time (about 10 minutes) and finally prompted to load failed, I would like to ask if I run the wrong method, or is there any other way to modify the maximum resolution.
both the virtual machine and the linux system are oracle.

are you using a virtualbox virtual machine? That is the source package for virtualbox guest, which requires you to implement installation and compilation dependencies (such as kernel-devel, gcc, make, perl, etc.), and then run the run script. Note that the run script does not have executable permissions on the CD and cannot be run directly by double-clicking. It must be copied, given executable permissions, and run interactively under the terminal.
